Intensification of Romanian-British cooperation in combating cross-border crime and illegal migration

 

On Friday, September 20th, 2024, Cătălin Predoiu, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Internal Affairs, had a telephone conversation with his British counterpart, Mrs. Yvette Cooper.

The discussions highlighted the very good cooperation between the two parties, activities being carried out both in the context of the Romanian-British Strategic Partnership, and for the development of operative cooperation at the level of similar structures.

The dynamics of data exchanges, information and the transfer of expertise have experienced an upward trend in the last interval, the expressed desire being to continue cooperation at the same standards, in order to combat cross-border crime, including by continuing operative missions.

The two ministers mainly addressed topics of interest in the area of preventing and combating illegal migration, cross-border crime and agreed to strengthen cooperation in the areas of internal affairs in the future.

In the context of the discussions with his British counterpart, Minister Cătălin Predoiu stated:
„The efficiency of the MIA structures in protecting borders and combating cross-border crime, from illegal migration to human trafficking and drug trafficking, depends on a functional network of international cooperation. We are constantly making diplomatic efforts to strengthen the presence of the MIA in these cooperation networks within the EU, but also with Romania’s other strategic partners outside the EU, such as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. From this perspective, the conversation I had today with Minister Yvette Cooper was extremely useful and we agreed to intensify the cooperation between the two ministries”.
