Half a year since Romania’s accession to the Schengen area with the air and sea border

*Between 31.03-30.09.2024, the border policemen have carried out more than 910,000 checks in the eDAC application, in order to verify the fulfillment of the entry/exit conditions from the country and the validity of people’s travel documents.

*During the six months, our workers carried out device checks on approximately 95,000 minors who traveled or intended to travel to the Schengen area.

As of March 31st, 2024, border guards at airports and seaports are no longer carrying out border control for people traveling to and from Schengen countries. However, our workers, together with colleagues from the police, immigration and gendarmerie, carry out timely and unannounced police actions to verify the identity and legal status of people, but also to prevent and combat possible illegal acts.

For efficiency, the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs use mobile devices that use the eDAC application, connected to the databases of the Romanian authorities and those of the Schengen Area.

Therefore, in the period 31.03-30.09.2024, the border policemen carried out more than 910,000 checks in the eDAC application, to establish the validity of travel conditions and travel documents of individuals.

Following the checks carried out by our workers, more than 1,500 people were discovered, on whose names there were national or international alerts, reported by various authorities, the people being taken over by the competent structures in order to follow the legal measures.

The most notable findings were the following:

* On 09.04.2024, an operative team made up of border police officers from the Henri Coandă International Airport Bucharest and workers of the General Inspectorate for Immigration registered a woman who had arrived from the direction of Athens and who presented an identity card with elements of similar to those issued by the Greek authorities. Following specific checks, it was found that the document is forged, and an asylum document issued by the Greek authorities was found on the woman, which shows her real identity and citizenship – Syria. The person stated that upon boarding he used a Romanian identity card, which he later threw in the toilet of the aircraft. The woman’s journey was interrupted and she was returned to Athens on the same aircraft.

* On 26.07.2024, a team from the Iași Airport Border Police Point, located in the Schengen departure area, identified a man who was at the boarding gate for a flight to Barcelona. Following specific checks, it was found that the man, a Romanian citizen, intended to travel with a fanciful, totally false document. He claimed that he is not a citizen of Romania or another state, and the document presented to our colleagues belongs to him by right.

* In the months of July and August, the border police officers from the Henri Coandă International Airport Bucharest, acting on the basis of the risk assessments carried out by the specialized structure within the IGPF, selected for control several people who were known to be transporting a significant amount of cigarettes. After carrying out the checks, it was established that six people, citizens of Greece and North Macedonia, who traveled from the direction of Athens and entered the green corridor „nothing to declare”. The team made up of border police and customs workers discovered after the check carried out on their checked baggage several packages containing hookah tobacco, in a total amount of more than 350 kilograms. The goods, whose market value exceeds 50,000 euros, have been detained in order to continue the investigations.

* On 10.09.2024, an operative team made up of border police officers from the Henri Coandă International Airport Bucharest and workers of the General Inspectorate for Immigration registered ten men who intended to travel in the direction of Athens, Greece. Following specific checks, it was found that they are Indian citizens and were illegally staying on Romanian territory. Those in question had their journey interrupted and were taken over by an operative team from the General Inspectorate for Immigration.

* Also, at Timișoara Airport, in May, a mixed control team consisting of a border policeman and a policeman from the Air Transport Police Bureau checked a female person, a Romanian citizen, who was accompanying her daughter minor. After the checks carried out, it was found that the mother does not have a notarized declaration from the father, nor was she able to provide proof of the minor’s residence abroad. Since the legal conditions for leaving Romania were not met, the minor’s trip was interrupted.

During the six months, our workers carried out checks with the devices in the equipment, which use the eDAC application, for around 95,000 minors who traveled or intended to travel in the Schengen area. Of these, more than 37,000 were accompanied by a single parent, more than 9,200 had another adult with them, and 1,350 were unaccompanied.

The joint control teams made up of workers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs will continue to be vigilant and carry out timely and unannounced police actions in the airport and port premises to prevent and combat possible illegal acts.
