On July 19th, 2023, in the context of the informal meeting of the JAI Council in Logrono, Spain, organized by the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council, Cătălin Predoiu, Minister of Internal Affairs, had a bilateral meeting with Ylva Johansson, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs.
On this occasion, an analysis was carried out of the projects carried out jointly by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the European Commission in the field of border protection and, in general, of the actions carried out by the MAI for the protection of borders and the fight against illegal migration.
The Romanian official emphasized that the efficient management of migration, the fight against illegal migration and the control at the external borders of the EU are priorities of his mandate. In this context, the European commissioner mentioned the very good results obtained following the implementation of the pilot project, managed by Romania together with the European Commission. Also, the commissioner, in her intervention during the meeting, once again expressed her support for the European Commission for joining the Schengen area and obtaining a favorable decision during this year.
During the discussions, the European official appreciated the results of the programs and actions carried out by the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs in the line of border protection and the fight against illegal migration, as well as the special efforts of the Romanian authorities in order to ensure humanitarian assistance for the Ukrainian citizens refugees in Romania and the social integration of those who remain on the national territory.
