High-level meeting to improve Romanian-Bulgarian cooperation in the field of internal affairs

On May 22nd, 2024, the Secretary of State for Public Order and Safety, Quaestor General of Police Bogdan DESPESCU, had a working meeting in Ruse, in the Republic of Bulgaria, with the Secretary General of the Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior, Dimitar KANGALDZHIEV.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Police and Border Police structures from the two countries.

The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the implementation of the aspects agreed by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Cătălin PREDOIU, with his Bulgarian counterpart, Kalin Stoianov, on the occasion of the visit to Sofia on April 18th, 2024, in the context of accession to the Schengen area, respectively the compensatory measures taken by the two states following the lifting of air and sea border controls.

The two sides established specific measures in order to intensify operational cooperation to combat organized and cross-border crime, with an emphasis on migrant smuggling, drug trafficking, and special operations. At the same time, future operative actions were established in the perspective of eliminating controls at internal land borders, with an emphasis on securing borders, combating illegal migration and organized crime in general.

As redards the upcoming summer tourist season, the delegations discussed measures aimed at managing road traffic at common border crossing points.
