Agreement between Romania and the Republic of Moldova for coordinated control at the state border crossing point Albița – Leușeni

On Thursday, February 9th this year, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Lucian Nicolae Bode, had a meeting with the Minister of Internal Affairs from the Republic of Moldova, Ana Revenco, during which they signed the Agreement on coordinated control at the state border crossing point by road Albița (Romania) – Leușeni (Republic of Moldova), on the way to enter Romania.

Based on the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Moldova, on the territory of Romania, the coordinated control of persons, means of transportation and goods crossing the state border through the crossing point at Albița is established. Coordinated control involves border crossing control carried out separately by the control personnel of the exit state (Republic of Moldova) followed consecutively by the personnel of the entry state (Romania), carried out on the territory of a single state.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Lucian Nicolae Bode, emphasized the fact that by signing this agreement, „Romania and the Republic of Moldova have undertaken a first step that will allow us to act in a coordinated and more efficient manner for a better facing of the current challenges.”

Also, the MAI official representative stated that „We signed this Agreement in order to strengthen the operational cooperation between our structures, aiming at simplifying border control, increasing the capacity to detect crimes, but also aligning the procedures and legislation of the Republic of Moldova with EU standards, respectively Schengen standards.”

On the occasion of the signing of the Agreement, the official representative from the Republic of Moldova declared: „Through coordinated control and the joint contribution of our states, we become important pillars, main actors in the prevention and fight against organized cross-border crime, terrorism, extremism and money laundering.”

The document signed today will contribute to the implementation of effective solutions for the fastest possible processing of flows of people and means of transport.

The border authorities of the two states cooperate permanently to strengthen the state border surveillance system, and the joint patrol actions ensure the operative exchange of information in the field of preventing and combating cross-border criminality.

Background information:

The length of the border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova is approximately 681 km, with six operational state border crossing points that are open to international traffic.

Last year, the crossing points on the border with the Republic of Moldova were transited by more than 9 million people, both on the way in and on the way out. Among these, 3.6 million people passed through PTF Albița.

At the same time, in 2022, more than 2.8 million vehicles crossed the Romanian-Moldovan border, of which almost 500,000 were trucks, in both directions.

Considering the fact that the border with the Republic of Moldova is external to the European Union, other authorities responsible for carrying out checks on the traffic of goods between the two states, besides the Border Police, participate in the border control.
